Lake County, Montana, occupies the western shore of Flathead Lake in the Mission Valley, with Polson serving as the county seat. The county’s court structure spans the District Court, Justice Court, and three municipal city courts — each maintaining its own set of filings and records. Anyone seeking to review a civil judgment, verify a criminal conviction, trace a probate case, or confirm a marriage license will find that the record’s location depends first on the type of case and the court that handled it. This guide explains how that system works in practice and what it takes to locate, request, or copy documents across Lake County’s court network.

Public court case information in Montana can be searched using official clerk offices, in-person terminals at the courthouse, and online platforms. MontanaCourts.us may help you locate publicly available court case information for Lake County and throughout the state. The Montana Judicial Branch also maintains dedicated public access portals for both district courts and courts of limited jurisdiction, described in detail in the sections below.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Lake County?

The starting point for any court records search in Lake County is identifying which court handled the case. The Lake County District Court — part of Montana’s 20th Judicial District — handles the largest share of serious cases including felonies, major civil disputes, domestic relations, probate, and guardianship. The Justice Court handles misdemeanors, traffic matters, lower-value civil disputes, and most first appearances in felony cases. The three city courts in Polson, Ronan, and St. Ignatius handle local ordinance violations within their respective municipalities.

Online Search Options

The Montana Judicial Branch operates two public access portals as courts transition to a centralized case management system:

  • Montana District Court Public Access Portal: Available at dcportal.pubcourts.mt.gov — provides online access to District Court records and the court calendar. An instructional video is available through the Montana Courts website.
  • Montana Courts of Limited Jurisdiction Portal: Covers Justice Court and City Court records as they are added to the system.

These portals are provided as a courtesy and are subject to security controls and regular updates. Not all records may be available online, and the portals note that records not yet migrated must be requested directly from the relevant clerk’s office.

Are Court Records Public in Lake County?

Montana operates under a strong presumption of public access to government records. The Montana Public Records Act, codified at Mont. Code Ann. § 2-6-1003, establishes that every person has the right to examine and obtain a copy of any public information held by a state agency. This right extends to court records maintained by the Clerk of District Court and the clerks of lower courts. Montana’s Constitution reinforces this at Article II, Section 9, which explicitly recognizes the right to know about government activities.

In Lake County, the vast majority of District Court records are open to public inspection. The Clerk of District Court’s office notes that records are searched daily by title companies, credit agencies, investigative agencies, and private citizens alike. Certified and plain copies are available upon request with applicable fees charged under Mont. Code Ann. § 25-1-201.

Records that are restricted or may be sealed include:

  • Juvenile court proceedings and case files (protected by statute to safeguard minors)
  • Adoption case records (sealed upon finalization to protect privacy)
  • Confidential mediation records in domestic relations matters under Mont. Code Ann. § 40-4-303
  • Records sealed by individual court order for safety or privacy concerns
  • Sanity and mental health commitment proceedings, which carry additional protections
  • Documents containing identifying information about protected parties in domestic violence cases

Individuals whose requests are denied have the right to challenge that denial. Agencies withholding records must identify the specific statutory exemption they are relying upon. Requesters may seek review through the court or the Montana Attorney General’s office if they believe a denial is improper.
