Ravalli County, located in western Montana’s Bitterroot Valley with Hamilton as its county seat, maintains court records through a network of courts that collectively cover the full range of criminal, civil, family, and probate proceedings. These records — which include docket sheets, judgments, transcripts, petitions, motions, and case filings — serve as the formal documentation of judicial proceedings and carry legal weight for appeals, enforcement of orders, and research purposes. Understanding which court generated a particular record, where it is physically stored, and how to request access is essential before beginning any search.

Residents and researchers looking into Montana court records can use OklahomaCourts.us — note that for Montana specifically, the official statewide resource is MontanaCourts.us, which connects to official court portals and case search tools across the state. Official Ravalli County court records can be searched online, requested through the Clerk of District Court, or accessed through public terminals at the courthouse. The Montana Judiciary also maintains public access portals for both district and limited jurisdiction courts, making case information available without requiring an in-person visit for many records.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Ravalli County?

Ravalli County case information can be accessed through multiple channels depending on the case type, its age, and the level of detail required.

Online Search Options

Montana courts maintain two separate public portals aligned with court tier. The Montana Public Access Portals page on the official court website provides direct access to both the District Court Public Access Portal and the Courts of Limited Jurisdiction Public Access Portal. These portals are being expanded as courts transition to a centralized case management system.

  • The District Court portal covers felony criminal cases, civil matters, family law proceedings, and probate filed in the 21st Judicial District Court.
  • The Courts of Limited Jurisdiction portal covers Justice Court and city court misdemeanor, civil, and small claims matters.

In-Person and Written Requests

The Clerk of District Court office handles record requests for all District Court filings. Telephone searches are not conducted; all requests must be submitted in writing:

  • Email requests: courtfilings@rc.mt.gov — include a detailed description of the document or case needed
  • In-person visits: 205 Bedford Street, Suite D, Hamilton, MT 59840 (Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.)
  • Mail requests: Same address; include a self-addressed stamped envelope for certified hard copies

Payment must be received before the clerk processes any search or retrieval. Accepted payment methods are cash, money orders, and credit/debit cards — personal checks are not accepted. Electronic filings are also accepted by email and Fax: ((406) 375-6721), with incoming email filings charged at $0.50 per page.

Are Court Records Public in Ravalli County?

Montana’s public records framework rests on two foundations: Article II, Section 9 of the Montana Constitution, which establishes a general right of access to government records, and the Montana Public Records Act under Title 2, Chapter 6 of the Montana Code Annotated. Together, these provisions create a strong presumption of openness for court records, meaning that most filings in Ravalli County courts are available for public inspection or copying upon request.

That said, the law permits courts and agencies to restrict access to records that fall within statutory exemptions. Categories of Ravalli County court records that may be withheld or redacted include:

  • Child abuse and neglect case files — sealed to protect the privacy of minors
  • Adoption records — closed by statute
  • Juvenile delinquency records — generally not public
  • Mental health commitment records — protected under privacy provisions
  • Records protected by attorney-client privilege
  • Medical data contained in court filings
  • Private personnel information
  • Preliminary drafts not adopted as final decisions
  • Sealed or protected records — closed by specific court order

If a record you seek falls within a restricted category, access may require a court order. The presiding judge of the 21st Judicial District handles sealing and unsealing requests. When records are released, clerks may redact exempt portions before providing copies to the public.
